I’ve just posted a short on my writing blog (http://thecultofanne.wordpress.com/) called No Turning Back. It is a 300 word flash story based on a prompt (the map at the top of the post) and it had to be speculative fiction (SFF). Unlike most of my writing, I decided to go with traditional fantasy, as that would be easier to set up than having to provide a huge backstory. It’s not orcs and trolls; it’s more like a world of faeries and winged elfs … that sort of thing.
I don’t know if I have a chance at winning. Those challenges are usually won by stories with a highly improbably twist on the theme (almost always funny), rather than by the quality of the writing. Mine (in the parallel discussion) has already been described as “marvellous” and a darkly romantic fantasy. I prefer to think of this as a story steeped in honor and pride, rather than romance. Read it for yourselves and let me know what you think. The challenge may be found at http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk in the Aspiring writers/writing challenges forum. Closing date is Apr 30.
